8:30 AM Plenary Low Cost “Plastic” Solar Cells: A Dream or Reality???: Alan Heeger1; 1University of California, Santa Barbara Polymer solar cells with power conversion efficiencies in excess of 5% are demonstrated using bulk heterojunction materials. Spatial Fourier transform methods have been used to study and optimize the morphology. Light harvesting has been improved by using a novel low-bandgap conjugated polymer, with an optical energy gap of Eg~1.5 eV. Solar cells with a TiOx layer (deposited by a sol-gel process) between the active layer and the electron collecting aluminum electrode exhibit enhanced power conversion efficiency and significantly improved lifetime compared to similar devices without the TiOx layer. The use of TiOx provides several important opportunities; specifically, the TiOx layers enable higher performance from single cells, longer lifetime as a result of reduced sensitivity of the solar cell to oxygen and water vapor, and the fabrication of bulk heterojunction cells in the ‘Tandem Cell’ architecture, a multilayer structure that is equivalent to two photovoltaic cells in series.

Recent development of carbon nanotubes materials as counter electrode for dye-sensitized solar cells
Dye-sensitized solar cells present promising low-cost alternatives to the conventional Silicon (Si)-based solar cells. The counter electrode generally consists of Pt deposited onto FTO plate. Since Pt is rare and expensive metal, nanostructured carbonaceous materials have been widely investigated as a promising alternative to replace it. Carbon nanotubes have shown significant properties such...

Organic solar cells (OSCs) have gained serious attention during the last decade and are now considered as one of the future photovoltaic technologies for low-cost power production. The first dream of attaining 10% of power coefficient efficiency has now become a reality thanks to the development of new materials and an impressive work achieved to understand, control and optimize structure and m...
متن کاملFlexible Microcrystalline Silicon Solar Cells on Periodically Textured Plastic Substrates
Roll-to-roll processing of thin film solar cells on flexible low cost substrates is an attractive option to lower the production cost of photovoltaic modules. Plastic substrates like PET or PEN are insulating which potentially offers advantages compared to conducting steel foils. However, plastic substrates require lower processing temperatures and novel schemes for efficient light trapping. In...
متن کاملEffect of TiO2 Nanofiber Density on Organic-Inorganic Based Hybrid Solar Cells (RESEARCH NOTE)
Abstract In this work, a comparative study of hybrid solar cells based on P3HT and TiO2 nanofibers was accomplished. Electrospinning, a low cost production method for large area nanofibrous films, was employed to fabricate the organic-inorganic hybrid solar cells based on poly (3-hexylthiophene) and TiO2 nanofibers. The performance of the hybrid solar cells was analyzed for four density levels ...
